Island Cuba Spain West Indies Slavery Lecture Anti-Slavery Convention
This portrait of Cuba looks at the island's laws, economy and society, its future as a Spanish colony and its relationships with neighbouring countries, including the US. Chapter five, on the condition of slaves in Cuba, was originally delivered as a lecture at the General Anti-Slavery Convention entitled 'An Address on Slavery in Cuba' (114-82). Madden dismisses the British and French idea of a "mild" form of slavery in Spain's colonies, describing examples of cruelty and corruption he has witnessed during his tours of Cuban plantations.
Includes a number of appendices on the British abolition movement, slavery in the Americas, the continued transatlantic slave trade to Cuba and Brazil, etc.
